Very Special Wine Tasting ~ Launch Party For "Charleston Then and Now" and Reyneke Wines!

Please join us this week on Wednesday, May 15, for a very special Wine On The Water Wednesday!

We're thrilled to host a truly special occasion with two special guests: renowned author Leigh Jones Handal and Reyneke Wine Maker Barbara Melke.

We're excited to have Leigh Jones Handal with us to launch her latest book, 'Charleston Then and  Now.'

Leigh, a dear friend of The Wine Shop of Charleston, is Chick-in-Charge at Charleston Raconteurs; "Do You Know Your Lowcountry" columnist at Charleston Post & Courier; author of "Lost Charleston",  "Storied & Scandalous Charleston" and "Charleston Then and Now".

Charleston Then and Now

City guide Leigh Jones Handal tells the story of the Charleston she loves through archive photos matched with their modern viewpoint.

There are vintage photos of the great plantation houses, plus the grand buildings on Meeting Street, and the soaring spires of Charleston’s many churches. Handal has uncovered a treasury of vintage images which have been matched with modern photos to show new aspects of this enduringly fascinating city.

Leigh will join us for a reading of an excerpt from her work and signing copies from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

Reyneke Wines with Wine Maker Barbara Melke

In 1988, the Reyneke family bought the farm Uitzicht, a 90-acre farm on the ridge of the Polkadraai Hills, with spectacular views of Stellenbosch. Johan Reyneke initiated the extensive transition from conventional farming to organic practices, aligning with biodynamic principles. Reyneke earned the distinction of becoming South Africa's inaugural farm to receive certification from Demeter International, the preeminent global authority on biodynamic accreditation.

In addition to the book launch, we are very excited to have another special guest with us, Wine Maker Barbara Melkewe.  Barbara Melck joined Reyneke as Winemaker in 2022. Barbara was attracted to biodynamic and organic winemaking because of the respect for nature required throughout the entire process. “When you farm this way, you have a different kind of respect for the soil, the land, the vines, people and the environment. You learn to think about this differently and to respect the natural way things are. Working with nature instead of against it,” she says.
