The Decadence of Wine and Chocolate

"All you need is Love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt either." -Charles M Schulz, Creator of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang

Do you want to be our Valentine this year?

Don't answer that just yet. Wait til you get to the end to decide. We'd rather know we attempted to plead our case and convince you than face outright rejection.

Here's what we have to offer:

LOVE

Stolpman Love You Bunches Rosé, Grenache; Syrah; Mourvedre

This wine had us at the proverbial 'Hello'. (By Hello, we mean the label alone). Forget the fact that it's a light and fresh Provencal-style rosé from California using the usual suspects of varietals from Provence. Forget the fact that this easy-drinking delight is delicious. The label alone is worth it!

Pairing:

Chocolate with raspberry. Chocolate with hazelnuts. Chocolate dipped strawberries.

SEDUCTION

Pascal Berthier Esprit de Seduction Saint-Amour, Gamay

Of the ten Crus (villages) of Beaujolais, Saint-Amour is known as the most romantic. This is a sexy and sensual expression of Gamay and winemaker Pascal Berthier knows it; hence it's moniker Esprit de Seduction: The Spirit of Seduction.

Pairing:

White chocolate. Milk chocolate. Milk chocolate with cherries.

SULTRY

Fratelli Alessandria Rossoluna Langhe Rosso, Nebbiolo; Barbera; Freisa

Located in the small hilltop village of Verduno at the northern edge of Barolo, the winery won two important prizes at the agrarian competition held in 1843 on the initiative of King Carlo Alberto. An article on the Gazzetta Ufficiale of the Associazione Agraria of November 2nd, 1843 reports of the two golden medals that the winery was awarded and reads: “for the improvement in wine making through the method of condensation, that is being used in the royal winery as well by the oenologist Staglieno, and for the successful expeditions of their wines overseas.”. The second one, obtained on a par with Camillo Benso Cavour Conte, reads: “for the best method to arrange winery."

Pairing:

Cocoa nib. Dark chocolate.

DECADENT

Sandeman Port Fine Tawny, Tinta Amarela; Tinta Barroca; Tinta Roriz; Tinto Cao; Touriga Franca

In 1790 an ambitious young Scottish man named George Sandeman established Sandeman, now one of the world's leading port wine businesses. By 1835, Sandeman was the leading port shipper globally. Today, after over 230 years in business, Sandeman is still one of the world's leading port producers.

Chocolate with sea salt. Dark chocolate.

Runners Up:

These last two may not have made the Tasting cut, but that doesn't mean you should overlook them when it comes to opening something fun and special come Valentine's Day night!

FLIRTY

Martha Stoumen Post Flirtation Red Blend

A sensual blend of Carignan with Zinfandel from the incredibly talented Martha Stoumen, but really the name says it all!

LADIES MAN

La Spinetta Il Nero Casanova Sangiovese

While for this wine 'Casanova' is the name of the Estate, for our purposes, we'll insinuate that Casanova refers to the legendary (infamous?) Italian Author and Adventurer Giacomo Girolamo Casanova, who's name has become synonymous for a man who seduces many women and keeps several mistresses and lovers.

So there you have it. That's our case and what we have to offer. Just some lush and delicious wines and chocolate decadence. Maybe a little charisma and charm to go along with it. Come on out on Wednesday the 9th and let us know if we can be your special Valentine this year!

See you there,

Salud,

The Wine Shop Team
